It starts with the work, which is genuinely difficult and matters to customers who rely on it every day. Most of them came to us after another platform failed to scale, so problems tend to arrive already hard and already urgent. When something you build holds up under a load nobody else could handle, a real team somewhere gets their week back.

Then there is scale. We are small enough that you will know the effect of what you built, and small enough that nobody has to invent a reason for your job to exist. You will own things outright rather than contribute to them, make calls that at a larger company would travel three levels up, and find out quickly whether you were right. That is uncomfortable at first, and it is the fastest way anyone gets good at this.

The rest is how we treat each other. We are honest about what is working and what is not, we say the difficult thing early rather than late, and we back people who take responsibility. Disagreement happens in the room rather than afterwards. A decision that turns out wrong is survivable if you can show how you reached it. What is harder to recover from is a problem somebody sat on.
